mod*mom editorial :: imported toys, food + drug safety

we need a stronger consumer product safety commission
(CPSC) to keep unsafe toys out of stores, + a stronger food + drug administration (FDA) to protect us from unsafe food + drug imports. only 1% of imported toys, food + drugs are inspected. foreign manufacturers risk incurring our weak penalties, because they know there's a 99% chance they won't get caught. toy, food + drug recalls are now "voluntary" on the part of foreign manufacturers, that's why they are able to make toys with lead + sell them in america to compete with strictly inspected american made products.
(here's an additional
video from the sierra club)
  • 80% of toys are made in china
  • 25 million+ toys were recalled this year (many for lead paint)
  • 15 CPSC inspectors at ports nationwide inspect all imported products
